Driving in Thailand is convenient, but if you’re planning to do so, you’ll need a valid Thai driving license. The process is fairly simple, but there are a few things you need to know before you start. Here’s an easy-to-follow guide to help you through it.

What Do You Need?

Before applying for your license, make sure you meet the following criteria:

• Age: You must be at least 18 years old.
• Visa: A valid non-immigrant visa is required.
• Health: You should be in good physical and mental health.

You’ll also need to prepare these documents:

• Your passport (with a valid visa stamp).
• Passport-sized photos.
• A residence certificate, which you can get from the Immigration Bureau or your embassy.
• A medical certificate from a local doctor or clinic.
• If you have an international driving license, bring it along.

The Process: What to Expect

The process involves both a theory and a practical driving test, with some simple physical checks beforehand. Here’s a quick rundown:

1. Color Blindness Test: To confirm you can distinguish colors.
2. Reflex Test: To check your reaction time.
3. Peripheral Vision Test: To measure your ability to see to the sides.
4. Depth Perception Test: To ensure you can judge distances correctly.
5. Theory Test: Covers road rules, traffic signs, and driving laws.
6. Practical Driving Test: You’ll be tested on parking, reversing, and other basic driving skills.

Theory Test

The theory test consists of 50 multiple-choice questions, and you need to score at least 45 correct answers to pass. Before taking the test, you’ll attend a 5-hour training session that covers driving rules and safety tips. If you don’t pass on your first try, you can retake it within 90 days.

Practical Driving Test

The practical test involves demonstrating basic driving skills. You’ll be asked to park, drive forward and backward, and handle tight spaces.

Fees and Renewal

The cost of a 2-year car driving license is usually between 300 and 400 THB. After two years, you can renew your license for a 5-year version. Typically, the entire process, including training and tests, takes about two days to complete.

Training and Test Schedule

New applicants are required to attend a training session at the Department of Land Transport. The schedule is usually divided into:

• Morning: 9:30 a.m. to 12:00 p.m.
• Afternoon: 1:00 p.m. to 3:30 p.m.

Once the training is done, you’ll take the theory test, and if you pass, the practical driving test will follow shortly after.
